political humor

well, after my week long pseudo foreign policy/political rant, i decided i'll take a little break since for my own sake (and probably yours as well). but that doesn't mean i can't link to something else. i was just browsing through other friends' websites and following random links, and i stumbled across this amusing anecdote about john kerry [it's the march 30 entry, totally fictional i assume, but funny nonetheless]. i have no idea who the person that wrote it is, but i thank him/her/it for making me laugh.

computers will be the end of us

i once saw this sci-fi futuristic show (an episode of outer limits maybe?) where the main protaganists (i have no idea who they were, i never really watched that show) had to travel through time and save the human race from extinction. not from starvation, alien invasion, or nuclear disaster, but from computers. and not in the matrix sense, but the story line was that there were only one dood and one chick left on the entire planet, and they never even saw each other. all they did was sit in their little cubicle homes and fight each other with these T-1000 type machines (thinking terminator 2 here) that they controlled from their computers. basically the only interactions they had were violent attempts to destroy each other vicariously through their remote controlled robots. so the time travelling folk had to go snatch them from behind their respective imacs and introduce them for the purpose of mating and the continuation of the human race. how weird is that? and yet, there have been instances in which i've imed my roomate asking what we should do for dinner instead of talking to him when he is less than 3 feet away from me at his own desk (this was back in college, just in case you're wondering).

i only thought of this cuz chu imed me today:

chu: i find it hilarious that we've both linked each other and read each others blogs but still haven't actually making real contact :-)
Auto response from me: snow days rock
chu: so: hi!

and you know what? he's right, hehe. it's not quite on the same level, and i doubt anyone will be trying to set me and chu up anytime soon, but it's funny that i keep track of his life (and other friends) and he keeps track of mine by reading each other's blogs/xangas/websites (or whatever other online journal type deal you want to use) instead of just iming each other and having a real time interactive conversation. i would say pick up the phone, but being in argentina puts that in the cost prohibitive category (with reb being the exception, of course).

so i've decided, as part of my leaf turning experience, to add keeping people updated and asking about their lives through email and im as part of my renewed effort to stay on top of things, electronically speaking. basically, i'm going to try to do a better job of keeping up on how everyone is doing these days...especially duke friends with whom i've had sparse communication since leaving school and later the country. if you're reading this, drop me an email (or im) if you haven't heard from me recently, and even if you have. as for you chu, i have to work tomorrow, so our convo will have to wait. but it will come.

oh, and just in case you're wondering, it's not snowing here in la plata....not even close (though at this point in time i wish it would). in fact, it's hot as butt right now, and it's a less than pleasant experience trying to get a decent night's sleep in this heat. as for my away message, well, it makes no sense, kinda like me, which is exactly why it's there. y'all take care now. g'night.

expanding my circle

look, chuberto linked me to his blog! i will return the favor and update the other links that lead to unused blogs someday in the near future. i've already been prepping myself for the mental effort, it's just a matter of time before i make it over the hump of inertia and actually accomplish something. i wonder if maybe chu or anyone else will wander over here from his site and read my lowly ramblings? that would be fun. i already feel a little more connected to duke....sigh, i miss college life. just not the work that comes along with it :P anyway, thanks for linking me chu, and welcome to any new readers who might stumble on over here.

so all the sudden my archives are back after mysteriously disappearing. i sure as heck didn't do anything to fix the problem, so either the blog tech people changed something or the internet gods responded to my request. either way, i'm happy that i can now go back and read the babble i've written over the past two years. but if it's not one thing, it's another, and now my commenting system is all jacked up. number one, all my old comments are gone, which is kinda sad, cuz zome of them were really encouraging from the few friends who read this regularly, and two, now it's just plain boring. it wasn't anything too sophisticated to begin with, but it was more than just black text on a white background....we'll see if i can't do something about that as well (or the blog people, or the internet gods, it matters to me not).

well, i don't really have anything pressing to rant and rave about today, and i had a word that i was going to look up, but i got distracted and forgot what it was. so sorry, no learning today. but i'm sure something will come along in the next few days. until then, i need to get some sleep. latez.
