people suck
i don't doubt that the situation is generally under control. however, two recent events have not only given the media even more fodder freak out over (which in these particular cases i believe they are right to do so), but also demonstrated just how disgustingly evil humans can become. first came the whole revelation of abuse occurring at the abu ghraib prison where u.s. soldiers were supposed to be detaining iraqi prisoners. instead, they decided to degrade the prisoners by forcing them to participate in homoerotic acts and setting guard dogs on them, all while in the nude and blindfolded.
i personally can't wait for those who were responsible and participated to be booted out of the armed forces, because they don't deserve to wear that uniform, bear my flag, or represent this nation. i know that blame is going to be passed up, down, and all around...right now, cia interrogators are being blamed for their overbearing techniques. that may be well and true, but it's nowhere near what's pictured in those photos. that's simply the result of sick & twisted minds drunk on power.
then, yesterday i saw on the news that an american civilian (totally unaffiliated with the military or pentagon) was kidnapped and beheaded by terrorists, and the video was being shown on a radical islamic website linked to al qaeda. in the states, all you would have seen are some still photos, and perhaps some of the video before the killing occurred. standards here in argentina area a lot more lax, and here they showed the entire video, beheading and all, on the nightly news. i'll spare you the details, but repulsive, sickening, disgusting, enraging, shocking, revolting, and all other synonyms of the preceding words are not enough to describe what transpired. neither act was legitimate nor permissible, no matter what the supposed impetus might be, but the fact that a life was lost (and the manner in which it was) makes the case of michael berg so much more barbaric to me.
i'm still shaken by what i saw, and i honestly don't know that i'll ever forget those images. however beyond that, i think what i saw really brought into focus the depravity of man for me. i've read so many news reports about terrorist attacks, bombings, wartime atrocities, and the like, but they were never more than words that i read. i just keep asking myself, how could someone do that? and take pride in it? and believe that God will reward them? what the @#$! are you people thinking???
i really can't write anything else about this now because there is a disconnect between whatever screwed up logic these guys are using and that of the real world. all i can say anyone who believes that man is fundamentally good just had the basis of their worldview nuked out of the flippin water (just in case don't think history provides a sufficient base of evidence). bye bye confucianism, leftist idealism, pelagian & arminian theologies, and rousseauian philosophy. hello God. could we need You any more? i think not.
